Puppy O'Clock

I've awakened promptly at 5:30 am for thirty years or more. It has been so consistent that I can honestly say that I am not certain that my alarm clock works. Seven days a week, my internal alarm awakens me.

Of course, now that is all changed.

I've made a minor effort to lie in now that I am not working every day. On a couple of occasions I have managed to sleep to 7:00 am. Once I went back to bed after rising at 6:00 and stayed in bed, asleep, until after 9:00. Slowly, I have been able to adjust my clock to the point where I no longer awaken automatically and perhaps sleep late.

My puppy has other ideas. Each morning, at some time undiscernable by me, it becomes necessary that she wake me. Some mornings it is a nudge, if I have some body part near the edge of the bed. Some mornings it is "Woof! Woof-woof! Woof-woof-woof! Woof! Woof-woof! Woof-woof!" My Canine-English translator renders this variously as

  • Time to get up!
  • I'm hungry! Really hungry! I have to eat now! That's your job, right? Food? Water? I'm thirsty too!
  • Boids! Dere's boids in da yard! Hopping boids! Damn insolent hopping boids! I gotta to get 'em outta dere! Getcher ass up an' open da door!

I'm not sure which translation is the most accurate, but the point comes through pretty clearly.

I've been depressed the last few days. I guess that's why I've spent so much time a-bed. I feel considerably better at the moment. I can't say…

  • Robinson and Writing

I've been writing again. Gods be praised. The latest is a story about a warrior/mage. I'm on my old kick of "why can't a mage be a warrior too". I…
