Ambrose Bierce: disappeared 1914 Judge Crater: disappeared August 6th 1930 Jimmy Hoffa July 30th 1975
Who's missing lately?

I have this little fantasy that Ambrose Bierce, Judge Crater, and Jimmy Hoffa meet once a year in a cigar bar in Ybor City to have a glass of cognac and laugh about the fact that people still wonder where they are.

This topic came to my mind when I told someone the other day that a friend of mine I hadn't seen in many years had "pulled a Crater" and vanished off the face of the earth. He though I meant my missing friend had been hit by a meteor. I went on to explain that Judge Crater had vanished unexpectedly and drew a blank. I mentioned Ambrose Bierce and Jimmy Hoffa. I drew two more blanks. So I'm old. I get it. Who has disappeared more recently? Is there no contemporary reference?

I have definitely achieved my geezerhood.I keel you!

In England, the most famous missing person is Lord Lucan.

I looked up Lord Lucan. He disappeared roughly the time Jimmy Hoffa did. I could had him to my list, but anyone I told of it around "these parts" would be even less likely than I to know who Lord Lucan was and that he had disappeared.

*sigh*
:)

I'm 26 and I understand the Hoffa reference, at least. I'll admit to having never heard of Judge Crater and to having forgotten about Ambrose Bierce.
